Scientific and Engineering Board of “Rosatom” State Corporation: “Nuclear Medicine and Radiobiology”. Prospects of Use of Biological Radioprotectors

06/17/2019

On 17th June 2019 representatives of “International Center for Innovations in Medicine and Biotechnology” took part in proceedings of the Scientific and Engineering Board of “Rosatom” State Corporation, which was dedicated to “Nuclear Medicine and Radiobiology”. The scientific reports presented discussed “Development and Use of Biological Radioprotectors: State of the Art and Prospects”.

“International Center for Innovations in Medicine and Biotechnology” actively collaborates and implements joint projects in radiology and medicine with specialists of Moscow State Academy of Veterinary Medicine and Biotechnology named after K.I. Skryabin. At the meeting in “Rosatom” Nikolay Petrovich Lysenko, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Head of Department at Moscow State Academy of Veterinary Medicine and Biotechnology named after K.I. Skryabin, made a report discussing “Improvement of Human Radiation Resistance Using Sorbents and Plant-Based Radioprotective Agents“.

The Scientific and Engineering Board (hereafter referred to as the “Board”) of “Rosatom” State Corporation is a consultative and advisory body, which acts on a permanent basis. It was established for the purpose of scientific and engineering expert assessment aimed at assurance of steady growth in nuclear power industry, improvement of radiation safety, and development of fundamental and applied research and technological solutions in the field of radiology.

Among other reports made at the conference, there were those presented by scientists of Federal State Budgetary Institution “National Medical Research Radiology Center” of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, A.F. Tsyb Medical Radiological Research Center, and National Research Center “Kurchatov Institute”.

As a result of discussion of the reports presented at the meeting, the Board of “Rosatom” State Corporation concluded that the results achieved were successful. The line of research was recognized as promising and socially and economically significant for minimization of occupational risks for specialists employed at nuclear facilities and medical radiologists, and for mitigation of effects of radiation exposure of humans and domestic animals. The Board resolved to include pre-clinical testing of radioprotective agents developed by the Department of Radiobiology of Moscow State Academy of Veterinary Medicine and Biotechnology named after K.I. Skryabin into the research schedule of JSC “Rosatom”.

Further delivery of novel agents to medical institutions will be accomplished to protect personnel at nuclear facilities and people with occupational risks of ionizing radiation exposure against its negative effects.
